AS SEEN ON...

My Story...

Three years ago I was operating in my relationship like most women do. I was doing everything for everyone. Emotionally my life felt like a rollercoaster. I was exhausted, depleted, overwhelmed and full of resentment. It was a struggle taking responsibility for everyone emotionally and physically.

I felt like I had to be the strong one and keep my shit together all the time. My biggest fear was that I was failing as a mum and a wife. I was doing everything for everyone and I still felt like I was failing.

I kept waiting for someone else to give me permission to look after myself and do something for me. Like I needed my husband's permission to actually do something for me.

Until one day I realised that I would be waiting forever because the only person who can put me first is me. I was missing out on so much love and life just waiting.

It was a cost I was not willing to pay anymore. The pain of missing out on enjoying my children, my husband and my life was far more painful and harder to live with than a messy house.

From that moment on I stopped being everything to everyone else and no one to myself. I started choosing me and I realised that it was my job all along to put myself first.

I started to feel so much happier and lighter in myself and everything started to feel easier.

Where I was...

But after the birth of my second child I started to notice a difference in my relationship with my husband.

We had been married five years at this point and we were not connecting and communicating like we used to. All our conversations seemed to revolve around parenting, bills, and food shopping. We were arguing more and more and comparing who was doing the most and who wasn't doing enough.

It was a stressful, exhausting, and draining place to be. Like most parents, we were so busy meeting all the needs of our children that we were barely meeting our own needs, let alone the needs of the relationship.

We both felt physically and emotionally exhausted with two kids under three. We wondered if we were the only ones feeling like this.

Maybe you can relate?

How I got here...

When I did find the courage to speak openly and truthfully about our relationship struggles most people just responded with, 'It’s normal', and 'You’ve been married a while and you've got young kids, this is just the way it is. You'll reconnect when the kids are older.'

My husband and I nearly died after hearing this. The thought of waiting to reconnect in like 20 years once the kids were grown up and no longer needed us was terrifying. That just didn't seem like a good enough solution to us.

Sure, it was scary admitting we were having challenges, but nowhere near as scary as waiting and hoping to reconnect one day in the faraway future.

We were already feeling frustrated and resentful towards each other and we wondered if there would be any relationship left if we did what everyone else was telling us to do and just wait until the kids grew up.

My biggest fear was that my husband and I were drifting apart and we were not modelling love and relationships in a healthy way to our children. I felt like we were arguing in front of the kids more and more.

We were doing the best we could with what we knew but deep down we knew we could do better.

Where I am now...

So I DECIDED to be a leader and invest in myself and our relationship rather than give up full of regret. My husband was so inspired by my growth and transformation that he decided to join me on the journey too.

I now finally feel like I have time for myself to nourish my soul and fill up my cup. I feel like my needs are being met and as a result I am more capable of meeting the needs of my relationship and our children's emotional needs too.

My husband and I now feel like a team again, we understand each other, we are deeply communicating & connecting and experience MORE love, passion & intimacy than ever before.
